Kim Albea, the hands and heart behind Tailfeather Leather, grew up on a ranch in Wyola, Montana, surrounded by wide-open skies, hard work, and a deep respect for the land. Proud of her Crow heritage, she quietly weaves that legacy into every piece she creates—crafting leather goods that are functional, beautiful, and full of story.
Now living in Sheridan with her husband Joel, Kim is a proud mother of two grown sons. She balances her love of family and life on the land with her passion for leatherwork, bringing the same dedication and attention to detail from ranch life into her craft.
Each bag, belt, bronc halter, and accessory is designed to last, gain character with use, and carry a story alongside its owner. Kim believes that leather is more than material —it’s a living companion that grows with you, softening, scarring, and developing a patina that tells the tale of everyday life.
Why I Make Leather
Leather has a way of remembering moments. That’s what drew Kim to this craft—expressing creativity while making pieces that bring enjoyment and usefulness to people every day. Every handcrafted item is meant to reflect personality, hold memories, and become a trusted part of life’s adventures.
A Personal Touch in Every Piece
Whether it’s a handcrafted bag, a custom bronc halter, or a dog collar made with care, every Tailfeather piece is made by hand with attention, respect, and story. Kim loves helping customers create pieces that carry their own stories, becoming companions for the moments that matter most.
Why Tailfeather?
The name Tailfeather Leather carries a story of family and heritage. Kim’s family name is Yellowtail, a name that traces back to her great-great-grandfather, Hawk with Yellow Tailfeathers.
Inspired by this lineage, the name Tailfeather reflects both Kim’s Crow heritage and the legacy of those who came before her. It’s a quiet nod to family history, strength, and identity—values that continue to shape the way she lives and works today.
Just as feathers once symbolized honor and story, each handcrafted leather piece carries its own marks of life over time. Through Tailfeather Leather, Kim hopes to create goods that are not only beautiful and useful, but meaningful—pieces that carry a story, just like the name behind them.
